Here’s everything you need to know about Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.
The best cards offer additional benefits and protections on top of their rewards. The Platinum Card® from American Express is no different. Amex Platinum Card travel insurance includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance*, trip delay insurance**, rental car insurance***, and baggage insurance****. You also get access to the American Express***** Premium Global Assist hotline.
In most cases, you will have to pay for the trip with your Amex Platinum card to get travel insurance coverage, and it is usually secondary. This means that your American Express card coverage only comes into effect after any primary insurance you have has been paid for.

Amex Platinum Card travel insurance starts with generous trip cancellation and interruption coverage. If your trip is canceled or interrupted and you end up losing money on non-refundable, pre-booked travel expenses, such as hotels or tours, you can request a refund through this benefit. Covers up to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per 12-month period. Terms apply.
To qualify for coverage, you must purchase the entire round trip trip with your card. Your trip must also be canceled or delayed for a covered reason; Simply changing your mind will not be enough. Covered reasons include cancellation or interruption due to accidental injury, loss of life, illness, severe weather, military orders, jury duty, terrorist action, uninhabitable accommodations, and medically imposed quarantine.
If you’ve ever spent the night in a foreign city because of a delayed flight, you know how quickly expenses can add up. Whether you need to pay for accommodation, food, or toiletries, you may be able to get reimbursed through your Amex Platinum card’s travel insurance.
Card Showdown: American Express® Gold Card Vs. The Platinum Card® From American Express
To be eligible for this travel insurance benefit, your trip must be delayed by at least six hours and the delay must be due to a covered reason. These include inclement weather, terrorist actions, lost or stolen travel documents, and public transportation equipment failures. Thanks to your American Express card, you will get up to $500 per trip and you can make up to two claims per 12-month period. Terms apply.
When you rent a car, you can use the travel insurance on your Amex Platinum card to cover damage or loss. You’ll have to pay the rental with your card and decline the rental agency’s collision damage coverage. This benefit covers up to $75,000 in vehicle damage or theft. You’ll also get limited coverage for accidental death and dismemberment, accidental injury, and rental car personal property. Terms apply.
Some types of vehicles, such as cargo vans, vintage cars, and recreational vehicles, are excluded from coverage. Coverage is also not valid in select countries. Finally, this is the secondary coverage. That means you must file a claim with your primary coverage, such as a personal auto insurance policy, before you can file a claim with your Amex Platinum card’s travel insurance. You will then be reimbursed for any covered damage or loss that has not been reimbursed by your primary insurer.
If your luggage is damaged or lost by a common carrier during your trip, you may be able to receive a refund through your Amex Platinum card benefits. You’ll get up to $2,000 per person per trip for checked luggage and $3,000 for carry-on luggage. Terms apply.
The Platinum Card From American Express Benefits Guide
Your trip is covered as long as you paid for it with your Amex Platinum Card. Coverage extends to you, your spouse or common-law partner, and your dependent children. Some items are excluded from coverage, such as credit cards, documents, currency, eyeglasses, sunglasses, hearing aids, prosthetics, and prescription medications.
You will first need to file a refund claim with the common carrier and any other travel insurance you have. After that, you can file a claim with your Amex Platinum card’s travel insurance for anything that isn’t refunded. Airlines are known for offering negligible refunds for lost or damaged luggage, so this benefit can be really helpful.
This 24/7 hotline is available to all cardholders as part of the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance benefits. The hotline offers travel planning assistance, as well as general travel, financial, legal and medical assistance.
It is simply a direct line, so in most cases you will have to pay for any third-party services you receive. For example, if the hotline provides you with a lawyer referral or emergency cash transfer service, you will still have to pay the cost of hiring a lawyer or transferring money.

Your affordable round-trip transportation will be covered. This benefit also covers the cost of repatriating remains.
You can file a claim quickly and easily by logging into your Amex Platinum Card account. You’ll want to have any important documents on hand, such as receipts, medical paperwork, or airline paperwork. If the coverage you are seeking is secondary, you will first need to file a claim with your primary coverage.
There’s no doubt that Amex Platinum Card travel insurance is a valuable benefit. Many other American Express cards offer equally valuable protections. The best airline cards are also an option for frequent travelers, although they may not offer as extensive insurance.
