In most cases, you will have to pay for the trip with your Amex Platinum card to get travel insurance coverage, and it is usually secondary. This means that your American Express card coverage only comes into effect after any primary insurance you have has been paid for.

When you rent a car, you can use the travel insurance on your Amex Platinum card to cover damage or loss. You’ll have to pay the rental with your card and decline the rental agency’s collision damage coverage. This benefit covers up to $75,000 in vehicle damage or theft. You’ll also get limited coverage for accidental death and dismemberment, accidental injury, and rental car personal property. Terms apply.

Some types of vehicles, such as cargo vans, vintage cars, and recreational vehicles, are excluded from coverage. Coverage is also not valid in select countries. Finally, this is the secondary coverage. That means you must file a claim with your primary coverage, such as a personal auto insurance policy, before you can file a claim with your Amex Platinum card’s travel insurance. You will then be reimbursed for any covered damage or loss that has not been reimbursed by your primary insurer.
