The Platinum Card From American Express Review Fall 2020
Whether you’re a frequent traveler or someone who takes the occasional vacation, it’s important to have travel insurance. It can help you minimize the cost of travel hiccups such as lost luggage or a canceled trip. In the event of a serious medical emergency while traveling, it can even be life-saving.
Fortunately, travel credit cards often offer their own insurance. In fact, the Platinum Card® from American Express gets you more than just rewards points and airport lounge access. Along with the generous American Express membership rewards you’ll earn, you’ll also get pretty comprehensive travel insurance with The Platinum Card® from American Express. Here’s everything you need to know about Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.
The best cards offer additional benefits and protections in addition to their rewards. The Platinum Card® from American Express is no different. Amex Platinum Card travel insurance includes Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance*, Trip Delay Insurance**, Car Rental Insurance*** and Baggage Insurance****. You also get access to American Express’ premium global helpline*****.
In most cases, you must pay for the trip with your Amex Platinum card to get travel insurance, which is usually secondary. This means that your American Express card coverage only begins after any primary insurance you have is paid out.
American Express Insurance
Up to $2,000 per person per trip for checked baggage and up to $3,000 per person per trip for carry-on baggage
Amex Platinum Card travel insurance starts with generous trip cancellation and interruption cover. If your trip is canceled or interrupted and you end up losing money due to non-refundable, pre-booked travel expenses such as hotels or excursions, you can claim compensation through this benefit. It covers up to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 over a 12-month period. Terms and conditions apply.
To qualify for coverage, you must purchase the entire round trip with your card. Your trip must also be canceled or delayed for a covered reason – simply changing your mind won’t cut it. Reasons covered include cancellation or interruption due to accidental injury, loss of life, illness, inclement weather, military orders, jury duty, acts of terrorism, unoccupied accommodation and quarantine ordered by a physician.
If you’ve ever been stuck in a foreign city overnight thanks to a flight delay, you know how quickly the costs can add up. Whether you need to pay for accommodation, food or toiletries, you may be able to get reimbursed through Amex Platinum Travel Insurance.
Platinum Card From American Express Review 2023
To be eligible for this travel insurance benefit, your journey must be delayed by at least six hours and the delay must be caused by a covered reason. These include bad weather, acts of terrorism, lost or stolen travel documents and common carrier equipment failure. Thanks to your American Express card, you’ll get up to $500 per trip and you can make up to two claims in a 12-month period. Terms and conditions apply.
When you rent a car, you can use Amex Platinum Card travel insurance to cover damage or loss. You will need to pay the rental with your card and decline the rental agency’s collision damage coverage. This benefit covers up to $75,000 in vehicle damage or theft. You’ll also get limited accidental death and dismemberment, accidental injury and rental car personal property coverage. Terms and conditions apply.
Some types of vehicles, such as cargo vans, vintage cars and recreational vehicles, are excluded from coverage. Coverage is also not valid in selected countries. Finally, this is secondary coverage. This means you must make a claim with your primary cover, such as a personal car insurance policy, before you can make a claim with the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance. You will then be reimbursed for any covered damage or loss not covered by your primary insurer.
If your baggage is damaged or lost by a common carrier during your trip, you may be able to receive reimbursement through the benefits of your Amex Platinum Card. You’ll get up to $2,000 per person per trip for checked baggage and $3,000 for carry-on baggage. Terms and conditions apply.
American Express Platinum Review
Your trip is covered as long as you paid for it with your Amex Platinum card. Cover extends to you, your spouse or domestic partner and your dependent children. Some items are excluded from coverage, such as credit cards, documents, currency, eyeglasses, sunglasses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, and prescription drugs.
You will first need to make a claim for reimbursement with your common carrier and any other travel insurance you have. After that, you can apply for Amex Platinum Card travel insurance for anything that wasn’t reimbursed. Airlines are known for offering small compensations for lost or damaged luggage, so this perk can really come in handy.
This 24/7 hotline is available to all cardholders as part of the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance benefits. The hotline offers assistance with travel planning as well as general travel assistance, financial, legal and medical assistance.
This is simply a phone line, so in most cases you have to pay for any third-party services you receive. For example, if the hotline gives you a referral for a lawyer or an emergency cash service, you still have to pay the costs of hiring a lawyer or sending money.
The Platinum Card From American Express
This benefit covers the cost of several emergency medical services. If you need emergency medical evacuation or transport, for example, your Amex Platinum Card travel insurance will cover the full cost as long as it’s coordinated through the Global Assist hotline. If you are traveling alone and end up in hospital for 10 consecutive days or more, this hotline can arrange for an adult family member to travel to your bedside. Their return, economy transportation will be covered. This fee also covers the cost of repatriating the remains.
You can apply quickly and easily by logging into your Amex Platinum Card account. You’ll want to have any important documents on hand, such as receipts, medical records, or airline documentation. If the cover you are looking for is secondary, you will need to apply with your primary cover first.
There’s no doubt that the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance is a valuable benefit. Many other American Express cards offer similar valuable protection. The best airline cards are also an option for frequent flyers, although they may not offer as extensive coverage.
Hopefully you won’t need to use it, but if you’re ever in a pinch while traveling, the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance can help keep costs to a minimum.
