While credit card insurance and travel protection coverage are usually considered secondary to rewards programs and other cardholder perks, these benefits are just as important if you travel.
When you pay for a trip with a credit card that offers trip cancellation and interruption insurance, for example, you can get back some of your travel expenses in the event that your vacation is interrupted for reasons beyond your control. Meanwhile, trip delay insurance allows you to apply for some reimbursement when your travel delay results in unexpected expenses, such as an unplanned hotel stay near the airport while your flight is on hold.
Amex Platinum Card Vs. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card [2023]
Chase credit cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, have stood out over the years for the protections they offer and the higher limits they offer. Still, American Express is still coming — it recently added trip cancellation and interruption insurance, and trip delay coverage, to many of its top rewards credit cards.
If you’re in the market for an American Express card and want to take advantage of important travel benefits, consider the cards below and their extended travel protections.
Here we focus on the rewards and benefits that come with each card. These cards are worthless if you pay interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay off your balance in full each month, make on-time payments, and only spend what you can afford.
New trip cancellation and interruption insurance from American Express credit cards gives you up to $10,000 in coverage (and up to $20,000 per account per year) that can be used to reimburse prepaid travel expenses like airfare and hotels. This coverage comes in handy if your trip is canceled due to a reason beyond your control, or you are stranded at your destination, requiring a longer stay and additional expenses before you can return home.
Amex Platinum Card Car Rental Insurance: A Guide
Note that this coverage is good for round-trip travel booked with your credit card, meaning you must pay travel expenses on a common carrier using your American Express credit card to qualify.
Other versions of the Amex Platinum card — including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and corporate flavors — offer this coverage, as do all versions of the Amex Centurion (Black) card, which is by invitation only.
In January 2020, American Express also rolled out an upgraded trip delay insurance benefit for many of its top rewards credit cards. While this perk may seem unusual, there are many situations where travel delay coverage can save you money and avoid unexpected expenses when your trip is delayed beyond your control.
With travel delay coverage from Amex, when your flight or other trip plans are delayed by more than six hours, you’ll get back up to $500 per trip for hotel stays, meals and other necessary expenses. If you’re stuck at the airport and your flight is suddenly delayed until the next morning, for example, you can use this coverage to get reimbursed for a nearby airport hotel and dinner, then an Uber or Lyft ride to the airport.
American Express Insurance
To qualify for American Express trip delay coverage, you must pay for your round-trip travel expenses using a common carrier with your credit card.
A few American Express credit cards also offer a baggage insurance plan, although this is not a new or upgraded benefit from the card issuer. This coverage comes in handy if your luggage is lost or stolen during a trip. To qualify for this coverage, you must pay for travel on a common carrier (airfare, cruise fare, etc.) using your American Express credit card.
The amount of coverage you get depends on the card you have. For example, baggage insurance from the Platinum Card® from American Express offers coverage up to $3,000 per person for carry-on baggage and up to $2,000 per person in coverage for certain types of checked baggage.
With luggage insurance from the Amex Everyday® Preferred Credit Card, you’re only eligible for up to $1,250 per person for carry-on luggage and $500 for covered baggage, though the extra benefit offers $250 for qualified “high-risk items” like jewelry or sports equipment.
Is The American Express Business Platinum Worth It?
Some American Express cards also offer secondary auto rental coverage, which means that as opposed to primary car rental coverage, this coverage kicks in after the other policies you have are exhausted.
While this benefit applies to many Amex cards, coverage limits may vary. For example, with the Amex Gold Card, coverage is limited to $50,000 per rental agreement for damage or theft, yet the Amex Platinum Card offers up to $75,000 in coverage. Insurance does not cover personal liability.
This coverage also includes a certain amount of accidental death or disability coverage that varies by card. For example, you can get up to $200,000 in coverage for an individual and up to $300,000 for accidental death and dismemberment per car accident. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of your credit card so you know exactly how much coverage you have.
Although American Express used to offer travel accident insurance on some of its cards, effective January 1, 2020 this coverage was dropped. The same applies to the American Express Roadside Assistance Hotline, which is no longer available.

However, American Express Rewards and travel credit cards offer plenty of protection for customers who pay for travel with a credit card. If you’re on the verge of signing up for a new credit card, be sure to compare card options and all of their benefits before you decide.
