Whether you’re a frequent traveler or a one-time vacationer, having travel insurance is important. It can help reduce the cost of travel expenses such as lost luggage or canceled trips. It can even be life-saving in the event of a serious medical emergency during a trip.
Fortunately, travel credit cards often offer their own insurance. In fact, the Platinum Card® from American Express only gives you rewards points and airport access. Along with the lucrative American Express membership rewards, you’ll also get travel insurance from American Express with the Platinum Card®. What you need to know about Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.
The best cards offer additional benefits and protections in addition to their rewards. The Platinum Card® from American Express is no different. Amex Platinum Card travel insurance includes Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance*, Trip Delay Insurance**, Car Rental Insurance*** and Double Trip Insurance****. You can also access American Express’ Premium Global Assist Hotline *****.
In most cases, you’ll need to pay for travel with your Amex Platinum Card to get travel insurance, and that’s usually secondary. This means that your American Express card only starts after you pay off your basic insurance.

Amex Platinum Card travel insurance starts with generous trip cancellations and interruptions. If your trip is canceled or interrupted and you lose money on non-refundable, pre-booked travel expenses such as hotels or excursions, you may be able to recover this benefit. It pays $10,000,000 per trip and $20,000 per 12-month period. Terms apply.
To get coverage, you must purchase the entire round trip with the card. Your trip also has to be canceled or postponed for a valid reason – just changing your mind won’t cut it. Common causes of coverage include accidental injury, death, illness, severe weather, military orders, jury duty, acts of terrorism, uninhabitable areas, and cancellation or interruption due to quarantine imposed by a physician.
If you’ve been stuck overseas overnight because of a flight delay, you know how the costs can add up. If you need to pay for overnight accommodation, food or toiletries, you can get reimbursed with Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.
Amex Card Delinquencies Creep Up But Remain Below Pre Covid Levels
To avail this travel insurance, your journey must be delayed by at least six hours and the delay must be for a specific reason. These include inclement weather, acts of terrorism, lost or stolen travel documents, and malfunctions of common transportation equipment. With your American Express card, you can earn up to $500 per visit and make two claims within 12 months. Terms apply.
When you rent a car, you can use the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance to cover damage or loss. You will need to pay for the rental with your credit card and you will have to reimburse the rental agency for collision fees. This benefit pays $75,000,000 if the vehicle is stolen or stolen. Accidental death and dismemberment, accidental injury and car rental personal property will also be covered. Terms apply.
Certain vehicle types, such as trucks, vintage cars and recreational vehicles, are excluded from coverage. Coverage is also not valid in select countries. Finally, this is a secondary environment. Your trip is closed when you pay with your Amex Platinum Card. The information applies to you, your spouse or domestic partner and your dependent children. Some items are excluded from the environment, such as credit cards, documents, currency, eyeglasses, sunglasses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, and prescription drugs.
You will need to make a claim to your common carrier and any other travel insurance you may have first. After that, you can apply for Amex Platinum Card travel insurance for anything that isn’t covered. Airlines are notorious for offering small reimbursements for lost or damaged luggage, so this benefit can really come in handy.
This 24/7 hotline is available to all cards as part of the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance benefits. The hotline offers travel planning as well as general travel, financial, legal and medical assistance.
It’s just a hotline, so you’ll usually have to pay for any third-party services you get. For example, if a hotline offers you a referral to a lawyer or an emergency cash line service, you will have to pay the cost of hiring a lawyer or transferring money.

This benefit covers the cost of several emergency medical services. For example, if you need emergency medical evacuation or transportation, Amex Platinum Card travel insurance will cover the full cost until coordinated through the Global Assist Hotline. If you travel alone and are hospitalized for 10 consecutive days or more, this hotline can arrange for an elderly family member to travel to your bedside. Their tours will create economical transportation. This benefit includes the cost of returning waste.
You can claim your Amex Platinum Card quickly and easily by logging into your account. You’ll want to keep important documents handy, such as receipts, medical records, or airline documents. If the environment you’re looking for is secondary, you’ll need to file a claim with your primary environment first.
There’s no doubt that Amex Platinum Card travel insurance is a valuable benefit. Most American Express cards offer similar value protections. Although the best airlines don’t offer such extensive coverage, they are an option for frequent travelers.
