Whether you’re a frequent traveler or a one-time vacationer, having travel insurance is important. It can help reduce the cost of travel expenses such as lost luggage or canceled trips. It can even be life-saving in the event of a serious medical emergency during a trip.

Fortunately, travel credit cards often offer their own insurance. In fact, the Platinum Card® from American Express only gives you rewards points and airport access. Along with the lucrative American Express membership rewards, you’ll also get travel insurance from American Express with the Platinum Card®. What you need to know about Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.

The best cards offer additional benefits and protections in addition to their rewards. The Platinum Card® from American Express is no different. Amex Platinum Card travel insurance includes Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance*, Trip Delay Insurance**, Car Rental Insurance*** and Double Trip Insurance****. You can also access American Express’ Premium Global Assist Hotline *****.

In most cases, you’ll need to pay for travel with your Amex Platinum Card to get travel insurance, and that’s usually secondary. This means that your American Express card only starts after you pay off your basic insurance.

Amex Platinum Card travel insurance starts with generous trip cancellations and interruptions. It pays $10,000,000 per trip and $20,000 per 12-month period. Terms apply.

To get coverage, you must purchase the entire round trip with the card. Your trip also has to be canceled or postponed for a valid reason – just changing your mind won’t cut it. Common causes of coverage include accidental injury, death, illness, severe weather, military orders, jury duty, acts of terrorism, uninhabitable areas, and cancellation or interruption due to quarantine imposed by a physician.

If you’ve been stuck overseas overnight because of a flight delay, you know how the costs can add up. If you need to pay for overnight accommodation, food or toiletries, you can get reimbursed with Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.

To avail this travel insurance, your journey must be delayed by at least six hours and the delay must be for a specific reason. These include inclement weather, acts of terrorism, lost or stolen travel documents, and malfunctions of common transportation equipment. With your American Express card, you can earn up to $500 per visit and make two claims within 12 months. Terms apply.

When you rent a car, you can use the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance to cover damage or loss. You will need to pay for the rental with your credit card and you will have to reimburse the rental agency for collision fees. This benefit pays $75,000,000 if the vehicle is stolen or stolen.
