Which Credit Cards Offer Primary Rental Insurance Coverage?
Whether you’re a frequent traveler or a one-time vacationer, having travel insurance is important. This can help you reduce the cost of travel hiccups like lost luggage or canceled trips. In the event of a serious medical emergency while traveling, it can even save lives.
Fortunately, travel credit cards often offer their own insurance. In fact, American Express’ Platinum Card® gets you more than just rewards points and airport lounge access. Along with the generous American Express membership rewards you’ll earn, you’ll also get more comprehensive travel insurance coverage with The Platinum Card® from American Express. Here’s everything you need to know about Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.
The best cards offer additional benefits and protections in addition to their rewards. The Platinum Card® from American Express is no different. Amex Platinum Card travel insurance includes Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance*, Travel Delay Insurance**, Car Rental Insurance ***, and Luggage Insurance****. You’ll also get access to American Express’ Premium Global Assist Hotline*****.
In most cases, you must pay for the trip with your Amex Platinum Card to get travel insurance coverage, and it’s usually secondary. This means your American Express card coverage starts only after any primary insurance you pay for.
Capital One Venture X Vs. Amex Platinum: Venture X Wins For Simplicity
Up to $2,000 per person per trip for checked baggage and up to $3,000 per person per trip for carry-on baggage
Amex Platinum Card travel insurance starts with generous trip cancellation and interruption coverage. If your trip is canceled or interrupted and you lose money on non-refundable, pre-booked travel expenses such as hotels or tours, you can seek reimbursement through this benefit. It covers up to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per 12-month period. Conditions apply.
To be eligible for coverage, you must purchase the entire roundtrip with your card. Even if your trip is canceled or delayed for a covered reason—just changing your mind doesn’t cut it. Covered causes include accidental injury, loss of life, illness, severe weather, military orders, jury duty, acts of terrorism, untenable places, and cancellation or interruption due to physician-imposed quarantine.
If you’ve ever been stuck in a foreign city overnight due to a flight delay, you know how quickly the expenses can add up. You don’t have to pay for overnight accommodations, meals, or toiletries, you can get reimbursed through your Amex Platinum Card travel insurance.
Best Credit Cards For Travelers To Get Points And Benefits
To qualify for this travel insurance benefit, your trip must be delayed for at least six hours, and the delay must be due to a covered reason. These include bad weather, acts of terrorism, lost or stolen travel documents, and common carrier equipment failure. Thanks to your American Express card, you’ll get up to $500 per trip and can make two claims per 12-month period. Conditions apply.
When you rent a car, you can use your Amex Platinum Card travel insurance to cover damage or loss. You must pay for the rental with your card and decline the rental agency’s collision damage coverage. This benefit covers up to $75,000 in vehicle damage or theft. You’ll also get limited accidental death and dismemberment, accidental injury, and car rental personal property coverage. Conditions apply.
Certain vehicle types, such as cargo vans, antique cars, and recreational vehicles are excluded from coverage. Coverage is also not valid in selected countries. Finally, this is secondary coverage. This means you must file a claim with your primary coverage, such as an individual car insurance policy, before you can file a claim with your Amex Platinum Card travel insurance. You will then be reimbursed for any covered damage or loss not reimbursed by your primary insurer.
If your luggage is damaged or lost by common carrier during your trip, you may be able to receive reimbursement through your Amex Platinum Card benefits. You’ll get $2,000 per person per trip for checked baggage and up to $3,000 in carry-on allowance. Conditions apply.
Credit Card Application Rules 2023
Your trip is covered as long as you pay with your Amex Platinum Card. Coverage is extended to you, your spouse or domestic partner, and your dependent children. Certain items are excluded from coverage, such as credit cards, documents, currency, eyeglasses, sunglasses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, and prescription drugs.
You need to file a claim for reimbursement with the common carrier and any other travel insurance you previously had. After that, you can file any unreimbursed claims with your Amex Platinum Card travel insurance. Airlines are notorious for offering meager reimbursements for lost or damaged luggage, so this benefit can really come in handy.
This 24/7 hotline is available to all cardholders as part of the Amex Platinum Card travel insurance benefits. The hotline provides travel planning assistance as well as general travel, financial, legal and medical assistance.
It’s just a hotline, so in most cases, you pay for any third-party services you receive. For example, if the hotline offers you a lawyer referral or an emergency cash wire service, you still have to pay the cost of hiring the lawyer or wiring the money.

This benefit covers the cost of most emergency medical services. If you need emergency medical evacuation or transportation, for example, your Amex Platinum Card travel insurance will cover the full cost as long as it’s coordinated through the Global Assist Hotline. If you are traveling alone and have been hospitalized for 10 consecutive days or more, this hotline can arrange for an adult family member to travel to your bedside. Their round-trip, economical transportation will be covered. This benefit also covers the cost of returning the remains.
You can file a claim quickly and easily by logging into your Amex Platinum Card account. You may want to keep any important documents on hand, such as receipts, medical paperwork, or airline documents. If the coverage you are seeking is secondary, you must first file a claim with your primary coverage.
There’s no question that Amex Platinum Card travel insurance is a valuable benefit. Many other American Express cards offer similar valuable protection. The best airline cards are also an option for frequent travelers, although they may not offer such comprehensive insurance.
We hope you never need to use it, but if you’re in a pinch while traveling, Amex Platinum Card Travel Insurance can help you keep costs to a minimum.
