American Express Platinum Baggage Delay
Lost or damaged your bag while traveling? For frequent travelers, this is probably unavoidable, as most airlines have no idea where your bags are between scans. Some airlines, like American, offer live baggage tracking via app, but others don’t.
How Does Credit Card Lost Or Delayed Baggage Insurance Work?
Baggage insurance is therefore essential if and when your luggage does not show up on the carousel. In today’s post, I’ll dive into the details of the baggage insurance plans offered by many American Express cards.
It’s important to be aware of all the different rules and restrictions associated with Amex Baggage Insurance. Not all losses are covered, so it’s important to know these limits. If they don’t suit your travel needs, you may want to consider purchasing additional coverage elsewhere. Here’s everything you need to know about the basics of the Amex Baggage Insurance Plan:
Amex may cover losses resulting from damaged, stolen or lost baggage. Carry-on and checked baggage are both eligible for coverage.
To be eligible for coverage, you must travel on a common carrier, which Amex defines as any air, land or water vehicle (other than a private or rental car) that is licensed to hire passengers and is available to the public. Your rental car, as well as taxis and ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft, are excluded.
Amex Platinum Travel Insurance: What To Know
To receive coverage, you must also pay in full with an American Express card or use Membership Rewards points to book tickets through Amex Travel. However, travel booked with points or miles from other sources is excluded.
This policy covers both primary and additional card members. Coverage also includes cardmembers’ spouses or domestic partners and children under the age of 23. However, travelers must be permanent residents of one of the 50 states, Washington, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.
Most American Express cards will cover the cost of replacing checked bags and their contents up to $500 per person, although so-called high-risk items are only covered up to a maximum of $250. These items include jewelry, sports equipment, photographic or electronic equipment, computers, and audio-visual equipment. And carry-on bags are typically covered up to $1,250.
However, you’ll enjoy additional coverage on select premium American Express cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Business Platinum Card® from American Express. Check the Amex Baggage Insurance Plan website for policy documents for airline tickets purchased with each applicable Amex Card.
How Credit Cards Can Help You Deal With Lost Luggage During The Holidays
Eligibility and benefit levels vary by card. Terms, conditions and restrictions apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. The policy is underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company.
Just note that coverage is secondary; Amex will only cover damages that exceed the reimbursement you can receive from the common carrier.
This coverage excludes many items, including cash, tickets, animals, motorized vehicles, and anything shipped as cargo. In addition, this coverage excludes losses resulting from acts of war, government confiscation, and unlawful acts. It’s best to read your card’s policy to find out what types of losses Amex can exclude.
If you’ve suffered a loss and you meet the conditions specified in your card’s policy document, here’s what you need to do to get reimbursed. First, notify Amex of your loss by filing a “Notice of Claim” within 30 days of your loss. You can do this by visiting americanexpress.com/onlineclaim, calling 1-800-228-6855 in the US or 1-303-273-6498 abroad.
Lost Luggage Insurance
You must complete “proof of loss” documentation within 60 days. This documentation may include a claim form, a tax receipt and a written report of the loss of checked bags. Once your claim is approved, you can usually expect a refund within 30 days.
The benefits of American Express baggage insurance are strong, especially since they include carry-on bags. But when it comes to booking travel, not all Amex cards are created equal. One of the best options is the American Express Platinum Card ($695 annual fee; see rates and fees), which offers 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines or on AmexTravel.com (up to $500,000 in purchases per calendar year. ). The American Express® Gold Card ($250 annual fee; see rates and fees) is another strong option, as it offers 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com.
Amex Baggage Insurance covers some things you might not expect, including lost carry-on luggage without specifying that the loss must be the result of theft. So if you left your glasses or jacket on the plane, you should cover them up. It also doesn’t matter what form of shipping you use as long as it meets Amex’s definition of a common carrier.
Therefore, this benefit is likely to apply to losses incurred on subways, ferries, aerial trams, and almost any other paid public transportation. So you can also file a claim if something goes missing during the trip.

Even if the policy covers your loss, there are two reasons to file a complaint with the airline or service provider. First, Amex requires you to submit a copy of the claim to the travel provider as part of its own claims process. Also, Amex coverage is second to none. It will cover you more than what the transport provider does. So while the airline and Amex coverage may be individually inadequate, you may be able to receive compensation from both.
Cardmembers often forget about credit card travel protection. But it’s worth checking the benefits of the cards you usually use to buy airline tickets. After all, many of the best airline ticket purchase cards offer a variety of protections, including delayed baggage insurance, trip delay insurance, and trip cancellation/interruption insurance. If you find that your card doesn’t offer much protection, consider adding one of the best cards with travel insurance to your wallet.
