American Express Delta Skymiles Benefits

American Express Delta Skymiles Benefits

Delta’s co-branded American Express credit cards offer welcome bonus offers to earn up to 50,000 SkyMiles. But the real value of opening and holding one of Delta’s credit cards can go far beyond a big mileage bonus

Of course, free checked baggage – Delta passengers’ favorite benefit – is available on Delta flights, as well as priority boarding. But there are a number of other overlooked benefits of Delta Amex cards – including the new 15% discount on SkyMiles bookings – that don’t get the attention they deserve. Use them right and you can unlock a lot of additional value.

We’ll look at some of the new and lesser-known benefits provided by some or all Delta American Express credit cards.

Calling an across-the-board 15% discount like this undervalued is a bit of a stretch — it’s easily the best benefit on Delta credit cards right now. But it’s currently flying under the radar because it’s so new that most travelers don’t know about it yet, so we feel compelled to call attention to it.

Nearly all Delta cardmembers have access to the TakeOff 15 benefit, which gives you at least 15% off all Delta-operated flights booked with SkyMiles when you book through Delta.com or the Fly Delta app. The discount is applied automatically, meaning you don’t have to wait for a statement credit or discount to arrive in your account.

Delta Skymiles Gold Card Review

TakeOff 15 is available with both consumer and business versions of the Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum and Reserve credit cards. Only the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card with no annual fee will not see these discounts.

The 15% discount requires almost no work on your part to redeem it. As long as you have one of the eligible cards and are logged into your Delta SkyMiles account, you should see TakeOff 15 prices reflected automatically when you search for SkyMiles award tickets on Delta’s website or mobile app.

The TakeOff 15 benefit can be used for any fare. So whether you’re booking the cheapest basic Economy award ticket or the fare up to the Delta One business class fare, you should see the 15% discount applied. And there’s no limit to the number of times you can use it.

Regardless of which version of Delta credit cards you have, you’ll receive 20% cash back in the form of a statement credit when you purchase things like food, drinks and headphones when you fly with Delta. Considering that alcoholic beverages cost around $10 on board a Delta flight, paying with your Delta credit card will save you $2 (20% off).

How I Got Delta Platinum Status By Paying Taxes With Credit Card?

Unfortunately, onboard Wi-Fi is typically not eligible for this benefit as the fare comes from Gogo Internet or Viasat Wi-Fi and not directly from Delta. But since Delta now offers free Wi-Fi on most flights, that’s not a big deal.

There is no limit to the amount you can receive each year. It’s a simple and effective way to make in-flight shopping a little cheaper.

Each year you hold the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card, you will receive a $100 flight credit after you spend $10,000 during the calendar year. This credit can be applied to any Delta flight.

The annual fee on the Delta Gold card is $0 for the first year, only $99 annually thereafter (see Rates and Fees). This means you can offset the cost of holding the card starting in the second year with this benefit alone. Add in any checked baggage fees you’ll avoid by keeping the card, and the math becomes even easier.

The 5 Best Delta Credit Cards Of 2022

As long as you can spend $10,000 on the card in a calendar year, this is an easy way to save on Delta flights. And the $100 certificate is valid for a full 12 months after you earn it.

Most Delta SkyMiles credit cards offer free checked bags just for owning the card. And since Delta now charges $30 each way to check a bag — or much more if you’re headed internationally — you can save a lot of money by only avoiding bag fees if you have a Delta card.

Most longtime cardholders know about this free checked bag benefit. But there are some lesser-known aspects of this benefit that are worth explaining…

First, not only will you get free checked baggage yourself, but you’ll also get the benefit for up to eight other passengers, as long as they’re booked on the same reservation as you. Assuming all eight people check one bag, that would save you $480 in baggage fees on a round-trip flight. However, in order for the baggage benefit to apply, the primary cardholder must be traveling on the itinerary – authorized users on the account, unfortunately, won’t cut it.

Second, while you only get a free bag if you have one of Delta’s cards, you don’t need to actually purchase the flight with the card to receive the benefit. As long as your Delta credit card is linked to your SkyMiles account, you’re free to use whatever card you want to pay for your flight and you’ll still receive free bags for you and up to eight travel companions on the same itinerary.

This allows you to actually pay for your flight with cards that offer much better travel protections and earn more points than Delta cards. Book with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or even the Platinum Card® from American Express, which we think is the best card for booking flights.

For holding the Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card only, you will receive a credit of up to $100 every four years to cover the cost of Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Membership in both programs is good for five years, so these two Delta cards will get you set.

Since Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck, we think it’s the obvious choice if you plan on doing international travel in the next five years.

Delta Skymiles Amex Cards

Even better? The benefit does not need to be used to the actual cardholder. If you already have Global Entry, ask your partner or travel companion to book for free using your Delta Card.

Having access to the airport lounge before (or after) your next flight can be a complete game-changer at the airport. But only a few Delta SkyMiles credit cards will open the doors to the Delta Sky Club and even the American Express Centurion Lounges.

First, if you have the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card, you’ll be able to purchase admission to the Delta Sky Club for $50 per visit as long as you’re flying Delta that day, at least for now. This benefit will disappear entirely at the end of the year as Delta Platinum cardholders will no longer be able to purchase Sky Club access starting January 1, 2024.

American Express Delta Skymiles Benefits

Want free access every time? We recommend having the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, which includes free access to the Delta Sky Club when you fly Delta. But again, the days of this benefit are limited. Starting February 1, 2025, you will only be able to visit the Sky Club 10 times per year with your Delta Reserve card, unless you spend $75,000 or more per year on the card.

If You Have A Delta Amex Card, Today Is A Good Day!

In addition to your free Sky Club pass, Reserve cardholders receive two free Delta Sky Club guest passes each year. This means guests can come with you to the Sky Club for free. After that, you can pay $50 per guest to bring up to two guests into the Sky Club at a time.

Delta’s top-tier Reserve card can also get you access to American Express’ excellent Centurion lounges. But there’s a hitch: You have to fly Delta that day and you have to have paid for the ticket with your Reserve card.

Travelers with the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card were able to purchase Sky Club access. Unfortunately, Delta eliminated this card benefit in early 2020.

We often wonder whether or not Delta Medallion status is worth holding, especially in recent years after a series of automatic promotions and extensions during the pandemic. But there’s no doubt that once you climb the status ladder, you’ll be able to unlock further upgrades to premium seats on board your next flight.

Just Approved For Delta Reserve. I Remember Only Being Approved For A $1000 Credit Line On My Bcp Back In November.

Even if you don’t have Delta Medallion status, the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card can provide free upgrades for the space available just for owning the card… at least in theory. But just because you can be updated certainly doesn’t mean it
