While credit card insurance and travel insurance are usually considered secondary to rewards programs and other cardholder benefits, these benefits can be just as important if you’re traveling.

For example, when you pay for a trip with a credit card that offers trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance, you may be able to get some travel expenses reimbursed if your vacation is interrupted for reasons beyond your control. Meanwhile, travel delay insurance allows you to claim some reimbursement if your travel delay results in unexpected expenses, such as an unplanned stay at a hotel near the airport while your flight is on hold.

How To Use Your Amex Airline Fee Credit

Chase credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card have really stood out for years in terms of the protection they offer and some of the highest limits. Still, American Express is still making an appearance—recently adding trip cancellation and interruption insurance, along with trip delay coverage, to many of its top rewards credit cards.

If you’re in the market for an American Express card and hope to take advantage of some important travel benefits, consider the cards below and their extended travel protection.

Here, we’re focused on the rewards and benefits that come with each card. These cards won’t be worth it if you’re paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay off your balance in full each month, make your payments on time, and only spend what you can afford.

The new trip cancellation and interruption insurance with American Express credit cards will give you up to $10,000 in coverage (and up to $20,000 per bill per year) that you can use to reimburse prepaid travel expenses like airfare and hotels. This coverage can come in handy if your trip is canceled for a covered reason beyond your control, or if you’re stuck at your destination and need an extended stay and additional expenses before you can return home.

Amex Platinum Card Review (2023.9 Update: 150k (incognito) Offer Is Back)

Note that this coverage is good for round trip travel booked with your credit card, which means you must pay for common carrier travel with your American Express credit card to be eligible.

Other versions of the Amex Platinum card – including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and corporate flavors – also offer this coverage, as do all versions of the invite-only Amex Centurion (Black) card.

In January 2020, American Express also introduced an upgraded travel delay insurance benefit for many of its most popular credit cards. While this benefit may seem unusual, there are so many scenarios where travel delay coverage can help you save money and avoid unexpected expenses when your trip is delayed beyond your control.

With Amex Travel Delay Coverage, you can be reimbursed up to $500 per trip for hotel stays, meals, and other necessary expenses if your flight or other travel plans are delayed by more than six hours. For example, if you’re sitting in an airport and your flight is suddenly delayed until the next morning, you can use this coverage to pay for a nearby airport hotel and dinner, and then take an Uber or Lyft ride back to the airport. .

How To Maximize Benefits With The Amex Platinum Card

To qualify for American Express Trip Delay Coverage, you must pay the cost of the round trip with your common carrier using your credit card.

Quite a few American Express credit cards also offer a baggage insurance plan, although this is not a new or upgraded benefit from the card issuer. This cover can come in handy if your luggage is lost or stolen during your insured trip. To be eligible for this coverage, you must pay for common carrier travel (airfare, cruise fares, etc.) with your American Express credit card.

The amount of cover you will receive depends on the card you have. For example, baggage insurance with The Platinum Card® from American Express offers up to $3,000 of coverage per person for carry-on baggage and up to $2,000 of coverage per person for certain types of checked baggage.

On the other hand, with Baggage Insurance with the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card, you’ll only be entitled to $1,250 in coverage per person for carry-on bags and up to $500 for covered checked bags, though that’s an additional $250 benefit available for qualified ” high-risk items’ such as jewelery or sports equipment.

Your Guide To Amex’s Travel Insurance Coverage

Some American Express cards also offer secondary rental car coverage, meaning that coverage kicks in when other policies you have are exhausted, as opposed to primary rental car coverage.

While this benefit applies to many Amex cards, note that coverage limits may vary. For example, the Amex Gold card limits coverage to $50,000 per rental for damage or theft, while the Amex Platinum card offers up to $75,000 in coverage. The insurance also does not cover personal liability.

Also note that this cover includes a certain amount of cover for accidental death or dismemberment, which varies by card. With , for example, you’ll get up to $200,000 of coverage per person and up to $300,000 of coverage per car accident for accidental death and dismemberment. Be sure to read your credit card’s terms and conditions so you know exactly how much coverage you have.
