The Polaris Ranger series has been the driving force behind the company’s utility recreation sales. When Polaris first released the Ranger XP 1000, it continued to sell the Ranger XP 900, the machine that the 1000 grew out of. The XP 900 was a company best seller, and there was little motivation to mess with it. Even when Polaris updated the Ranger XP 1000 in 2018, the new machine was joined in the line by the venerable Ranger XP 900. Now, however, the Ranger 1000 (without XP in the name) finally updates and replaces the Ranger XP 900 .Polaris intends to sell both online, and it’s a bit confusing, since they’re very similar now, and there’s a $1,900 difference between our test machines. Both are Premium models, meaning they have EPS, cast aluminum wheels and upgraded seats. The price difference could be much greater if you select the base model Ranger 1000 without EPS or fancy wheels.
For a tight and slow trail, or general tasks and work, you won’t see much difference in these two Rangers. When you go out on a two-track mountain, the Ranger XP 1000 has a clear power, suspension and fun edge.
In 2018, the three-seat Ranger XP 1000 was the only one to get the new stronger one-piece frame, revised styling and bodywork, and performance changes. The multitude of changes made the Ranger XP 1000 more robust for work, but also more refined, so it was a better companion for play and recreation.
Running the muffler along the side of the Ranger XP 1000 cleans up the look of the rear. The Ranger 1000 has the muffler in the back. The bed works well.

Both machines feature the 25 percent stronger one-piece frame that was so great when it was released, and include fully sealed chassis bushings and bearings to aid performance and longevity. The underside of the chassis is almost completely covered with a skid plate close to 50 percent larger than the one that protects the 2017. The areas not covered by the skid plate have been closed to prevent the underside of the machine to catch and hold the mud. . The protection does not end with the skid plate. The front of the machine is guarded by a massive bumper that Polaris says is the largest in the industry. It has coverage for the entire lower front of the machine, including the A-arms and steering parts. There is already a winch mount and a bar to attach a snowplow. You don’t get a bumper that big on the base Ranger model, but since the two we’re comparing are Premium versions, they both have the big bumper.
Compared to past Rangers, the Ranger XP 1000 Premium has a better padded seat. The Premium edition of the Ranger 1000 matches the comfort.
They share the same modern and contemporary style, but the body parts are not identical, however. The XP 1000 has more space for body color. You’ll find a 999cc engine mated to a CVT behind both cabins. The drivetrain includes 2WD, 4WD and Turf mode that opens the rear differential to prevent rutting on delicate surfaces.
Both Rangers turn easily and are nimble, but the steering takes more steering wheel movement than the sportier models. The cushy-riding XP 1000 has a bit more body roll.

Compared to the previous XP 900 and pre-2018 Ranger XP 1000 models, the new machines are both quieter in the cabin with less engine noise. Even in identical trim packages, the Ranger XP 1000 is quieter than the Ranger 1000. The XP’s CVT and engine intake are under the hood, and the Ranger 1000 has grate-covered intake in the pillar B right behind the cabin. In terms of capacity and physical size, the two match up with 1,000 pounds of bed capacity and a whopping 2,500 pounds of towing capacity. They also share the width, overall length and distance. In addition to the normal versions and the High Lifter and NorthStar editions, factory-installed upgrade packages are available: Ride Command, Back Country, Winter Prep, Cab Upgrade and an MB Quart Audio Upgrade. Suffice it to say, you can take either Ranger in the exact way you want.
The new Ranger 1000 Premium and the Ranger XP 1000 Premium (the lowest trim level of the XP) are very similar. The XP has more body color and larger head pads.
One of the big differences in our Ranger comparison is that the Ranger 1000 starts at $12,999, and by any measure that’s a lot of value, even without EPS and cast wheels. The base model also comes with 25-inch tires. With any of the higher trim versions like our $14,999 Premium, it has 26-inch tires, while all regular versions of the Ranger XP 1000 have 27-inch tires. The lowest price Ranger XP 1000 is $16,899.
While the Ranger 1000 has 10 inches of wheel travel, the XP 1000 has 11 inches. The added centimeter
