2020 Subaru Crosstrek Performance Upgrades – The new-generation 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is everything you need, but it’s missing one key thing. See why Subaru needs to give customers the new 2020 Crosstrek XT turbo trim.

The Subaru Crosstrek has had a good run but sales of the compact SUV have slowed this year. Customers are pleased with the newly redesigned 2019 Crosstrek and like its utility all-wheel drive system, “go anywhere” with X-Mode, advanced safety features, and styling. But what’s stopping the Crosstrek from going to the next level is its lack of power.

It has plenty of power for the daily commute and is a perfect urban vehicle. But it doesn’t need the extra power to carry people and cargo especially up to high mountains. The next-generation compact utility vehicle is powered by a 2.0-litre Boxer engine with direct fuel injection. It received a bump in horsepower from 148 horsepower to 154 horsepower, from the previous generation model but the torque remained the same at 145 lbs. ft.

What the Crosstrek needs is a turbocharged engine option. Subaru can keep the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer in the 2.0i, Premium, Limited, and Hybrid trims but the Japanese maker wants a new trim level with a turbine engine. We are not recommending the Crosstrek STI with 250 horsepower, but the Crosstrek XT trim level with a 2.0-liter Turbo Boxer with 200 horsepower. Many customers want to buy the preferred one.

At the Chicago Auto Show in February, Subaru of America President and CEO Tom Doll told Motor Trend, Subaru won’t be bringing a turbo to the Crosstrek anytime soon. Doll said it’s because demand for the new-gen Crosstrek SUV is too high and it’s selling too well for them to offer a turbo version. Doll said, “You could argue, and some people do, that we should have a high-performance engine for the Crosstrek in that car, but on the other hand, we’re selling as much as we can. We haven’t topped the Crosstrek yet.”

Subaru hit the top with the Crosstrek in 2019. After seven full months in 2019, the Crosstrek is down 18.8 percent for the year. A 16, 397 units down from last year at the same time. That’s a significant drop and it’s time for the Japanese automaker to bring the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0XT turbo trim to customers. When will Subaru bring it? Stay tuned.

Jim Cramer Says Elon Musk’s Cybertrucks Won’t Sell 50K – Congratulations to Tesla Investors, The Truck Is Going to Succeed – by Tinsae Aregay The Subaru Crosstrek (or compact SUV or crossover, etc.) is a true Swiss Army knife of a car. It has hatchback practicality, a generous 8.7 inches of ground clearance from the factory, and even some rally car DNA.

Whether it’s being used as a daily driver, a weekend shuttle bus to the mountains, or a soft roader for exploring the backcountry, the Crosstrek has a lot to offer those who want all-wheel drive capability in size transferable.

Fortunately, there are a few basic bolt-ons that can increase the Crosstrek’s go-anywhere ability without going crazy with modifications or adding huge amounts of weight.

For this Crosstrek build, I managed to add a lift, larger diameter tires, metal bumpers, and a roof rack. After all, I’m not trying to make the most capable Crosstrek. Instead, my aim was to create a Crosstrek with a level or two more than factory capability. Something that would help with serious cross-country adventures, dirt road trips, and snow-40 backcountry trips.

Better tires, extra armor, auxiliary lights, and maybe even a nice exhaust system can transform the smallest of Subarus into part rally car, part all-weather wonder. It’s basically a cross-country Crosstrek.

My wife and I purchased a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Premium (with a six-speed manual transmission) a few months ago. We wanted a reliable, comfortable vehicle that we could take on long trips in any weather, as well as haul our gear and get decent mpg to do so.

With aging family members back in the Midwest, we wanted the ability to get in a vehicle and go whenever we wanted.

While the Crosstrek is a great platform out of the box, my aim was to make this Subaru more competent when the roads get rough – without sacrificing the reliability woes that can come with a heavily modified vehicle.

Upgrading the tires and wheels on any vehicle can instantly change its performance and style. The Crosstrek came with Yokohama Geolandar G91 tires, which are primarily a highway tire. While offering a smooth, quiet ride, if dirt and snow traction is your goal, there are better options.

From a practical point of view, I wanted to add tires that provided better traction on bad roads, dirt tracks and snow covered streets. Stylistically, I looked rough.

The BFGoodrich T/A KO2 All-Terrain tire is durable, offers great dirt traction, and is rated at 3PMS (three-peak mountain snowflake) for serious snow service. The original Yokohama Geolandar G91F only has an M+S rating. The KO2s also have a great aggressive style.

The Crosstrek’s factory tire size is 225/60R17, and the KO2s are not available in that size. They are, however, available in 215/75R15 — almost the same diameter as the one that came with the car (slightly 0.4% larger). But the wheel diameter has shrunk from 17 inches to 15 inches, and the sidewall profile goes from a 60 series to a taller 75 series.

The footprint is 10 mm narrower than the stock (215 mm compared to 225 mm). Going to the 215/75R15 size means the narrower tread will perform better in the snow. The taller sidewall would protect the wheel more when on bad roads or light track use.

And the smaller diameter wheel may allow for reduced weight. However, it also means we would need new 15-inch wheels.

It should be noted that the KO2 is not a lightweight tire. In fact, each 215/75R15 KO2 weighs 9 pounds more than the factory 225/60R17 Yokohama G91. To offset this heft, I looked for a lightweight 15-inch wheel.

I discovered REIKA Vehicle Solutions at Overland Expo West in 2022, as well as their 15×7 REIKA Seeker R15 wheels. At just a touch over 15 pounds each, these cleanly designed five-spoke rollers help KO2 achieve balance.

When everything is mounted and balanced, the BFG/REIKA Seeker wheel combo weighs 3 pounds more per corner than the factory pair of 17-inch wheels and tires. The total additional weight of wheels and tires is only 12 pounds.

In addition, the five-spoke design looks classic, has an aggressive concave design, durable flow-form solutions, and is easy to clean.

These wheels get more out of the fenders than the factory 17×7 wheel. They have a +15 offset versus the factory +55, which pushes them 1.37 inches further away from the body. But this also creates a smoother stance and doesn’t rub at all. Although not noticeable, the wider stance can only help with vehicle stability.

The end result offers improved dirt and snow traction and rugged style. Yes, the KO2s are taller than the factory rubber, but the combination of off-road/bad weather performance and good looks is a win for me.

I also tacked on a set of rally-style aftermarket mud flaps to help keep dirt/gravel rash to a minimum and protect the pearly-white paint. The mud flap weighs 3.9 pounds.

The Crossroads has significant ground clearance right out of the box. But with better all-terrain tires comes the ability to go further down bad roads and trails. And more capacity, which I plan to use, means more potential hits on the undercarriage.

To protect parts like the oil pan, transmission and rear differential, I installed a set of Primitive Racing skid plates.

Tigard, Ore.-based Primitive Racing is a household name among rally car owners and Subaru adventurers alike. I installed thick, American made front, center and rear aluminum skid plates. All are made from 3/16-inch 5052 polished aluminum.

The original flimsy plastic splash shield replaces the front skid plate with a sturdy bash plate. This plate covers hardware and helps protect the oil pan and other front components from hazards. It is available with or without holes to access the oil pan drain plug.

Although we don’t have the service hole, it offers the most protection. Primitive also claims that it helps with aerodynamics and doesn’t compromise cooling performance.

The transmission skid plate helps protect the areas behind the oil pan. Easy to install, it helps protect the gearbox from impacts. It bolts on in content
