Sitting on the job site or on a long road is easy with a comfortable seat and suspension that releases the seat. Reaching any job or destination is easy with the right controls, automatic controls and the necessary clearance to cross difficult terrain. All these characteristics also lend themselves to the creation of machines for sports, hunters, outdoorsmen, or weekend warriors after work.
Separated from the utility/entertainment section is a machine that can tow six people. This machine is not only good for large workers; they also appeal to fun-seeking families since the cost of buying and maintaining a six-seat UTV is less than two or three smaller machines. On behalf of these enthusiasts, we decided to do a detailed test of the updated, amazingly capable, and amazingly fun 2019 Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000.

The 1000 is powered by a 999cc, parallel twin cylinder, liquid cooled, fuel injected engine with four valves and DOHC per cylinder. With 10 more horsepower than the 976cc Can-Am Defender Max, Polaris wants more horsepower and torque for any side-by-side application. In 2019, the power output was raised from 80 to 82 horsepower thanks to a revised ECU, power output, and ECU optimization.
Driving with a wire gas pedal allows Polaris to establish a three-way power supply, stability, and performance. With a very high spread, the work function reduces the amount of noise that is obtained by a known number and spreads the sound output over the entire distance of the pedal giving better control, precision, better control of work or low work. The system allows you to respond quickly giving you quick power in aggressive driving. Standard mode provides full power, but reduces power output at the beginning of the pedal stroke compared to Performance mode. To allow you to stay outside longer, the fuel capacity has been increased by 1.5 to 11.5 gallons.
The entire PVT is new to the Ranger Crew for 2019. It features a larger gear ratio that allows Polaris to lower the driveline to handle the extra power and weight of a heavy vehicle, while reducing engine RPM at higher speeds for quieter driving.

The top end is compatible with the automatic, Polaris Variable, CVT transmission with high and low speeds, including neutral, reverse, and park, selected with a lift lever. The entire PVT is new to the Ranger Crew for 2019. It features a larger gear ratio that allows Polaris to lower the driveline to handle the extra power and weight of a heavy vehicle, while reducing engine RPM usage for stability. Engine braking has been added in 2019 to reduce the need for the driver to brake on long descents. The engine and transmission vents are a good place to draw clean air, raised up under the hood away from mud and excess water.

Drive systems include 2WD, all-wheel-drive, and Polaris’ VersaTrac turf mode, allowing you to unlock the rear differential for use on rough terrain. In steep terrain, Polaris’ All-Wheel-Drive system drives the rear tires for light control. With low slippage of the rear tires, the front wheels engage in four-wheel-drive locks until the system senses that traction has been restored.

Out on the farm, loaded with six people, the Ranger had plenty of muscle, easily carrying a trailer full of hay, which exceeded its 2, 500lb towing capacity. With plenty of torque, the clutch balances the balance between smooth action and a little bit of feedback to keep heavy loads moving.
The Ranger was used throughout the day to pull hay followed by a tractor, which pulled the bailer and hay cart through the hilly fields. The Ranger’s throttle response really came in handy, allowing easy throttle adjustment at low speeds to improve control and comfort.
In the fun test, we left the Ranger out of the game most of the time and maximized his fun. If you think Ranger is a normal horse, it might surprise you. The Ranger’s high-torque, 82hp engine provided a higher level of enjoyment than we expected. It starts with authority off the line and a respectable pull at medium speed. We had a car go over 50mph within a few hundred yards of the race.

In muddy conditions, the engine can break all four tires at the same time and spin them openly and show the tread of the tire. With most of our testing taking place in the rain, we ran in AWD almost 100% of the time. With the least amount of traction available on all our drives, the AWD seemed to work to pull the car. We were surprised by some mountains that a very heavy man could climb up in conditions where walking was a trick. There was no slippage between the rear tires losing traction and the front wheels starting to drag. The AWD worked flawlessly throughout our testing.

The engine delivers satisfactory performance in spirited driving, but is smooth and natural enough to work or drive at low speeds. At high speeds, the engine noise is very quiet. Conversation is accomplished without much effort.
The engine revs felt natural without overpowering. It was a welcome feature on slippery hills, making the brakes less demanding.
