Whether found through the Serengeti deserts, Himalayan base camps, or the urban landscape of the American South, 4×4 trucks like this 1996 Nissan XE King Cab are revered for their toughness, reliability, and rugged looks. If you want to survive the apocalypse, you just have as close to a guarantee as possible that your truck will start every morning without fail, it’s really about the Hardbody or Toyota pickups of the 80’s and 90’s. Beautifully preserved and 100% stock, this low pickup is as clean as it comes, and even though it’s just 25 years old, it’s just getting started.

Before you shy away from the price, I ask you to step back for a second and look at the pristine preservation of this Hardbody. Now go find another one on the market just like it. I bet you’ll dig up plenty of Hardbody trucks out there, but most will have a quarter of a million miles and chewed steel, or have been flamboyantly customized and driven through swamps for the past decade. This ’96 … Ask for full description.

Hp Nissan Hardbody Was Built To Win More Than Just A Race

Before you shy away from the price, I ask you to step back for a second and look at the pristine preservation of this Hardbody. Now go find another one on the market just like it. I bet you’ll dig up plenty of Hardbody trucks out there, but most will have a quarter of a million miles and chewed steel, or have been flamboyantly customized and driven through swamps for the past decade. This ’96 beauty never left Missouri before coming to us in Texas, where it was under the direct care of conscientious owners who respected its potential as a future classic. Aztec Red was a very popular shade and my personal favorite, accented with the original era-perfect decals along the side of the body. The paintwork is overall in good shape showing only minor blemishes that have occurred over the past 82,000 miles, but nothing beyond expectations. It still shows amazingly well, and a professional buff-and-polish would even take it up a notch. But unlike most of its siblings, there’s no rust to be found, no body dents, and really no signs of stress that would lead us to believe this truck has ever worked for a living. Just think how rare that is – an economy truck that was built to handle anything a person could throw at it, but it was never put to the test and worked hard. It’s like having a thoroughbred and never racing it. The restraint shown by the previous owners is commendable, and the results show how bright and shiny the grille and bumpers are, or how untouched the venerable double-wall bed (where the Hardbody got its name) remains today. And while this Nissan is still ready for anything it encounters, we hope the next owner will continue to take care of it at such a high level.

Inside, the surreal preservation continues, with an original gray cloth interior with bucket seats and an extended ‘King’ cabin. The high-back seats show very little wear and are comfortable all day, split by a factory center console just outside the tall 5-speed manual transmission. Like the body, the materials inside were designed by the Japanese to handle abuse, but they’ve barely been put to the test. The door panels are the only part that shows some age from the sun, although the dash is crack-free, the floor mats are still plush, and the headliner is tight and in good shape, too. Anchoring the cabin is the familiar steering wheel that has graced Nissans for over a decade, while just outside it the gauges are crystal clear and remain fully functional. In fact, everything still works exactly as it should, including the cold A/C, tilt wheel and standard AM/FM/cassette stereo in the dash. It’s also an incredibly safe truck, not only because the steel in the body is so strong, but also because the US-spec Hardbody trucks got shoulder belts, ABS brakes and dual airbags in 1996.

In America, we used to say that “there’s no substitute for displacement,” but modern technology (including our own) has all but rendered that idiom moot. So, before you bemoan the 4-cylinder engine in this pickup, know that it is one of the best engines ever designed for a production vehicle. Much like the Toyota ’22R’ series engines, the 2.4L KA24E SOHC engine simply runs forever with limited maintenance, producing superb low-end torque and a respectable amount of horsepower (132) for this light pickup, with the same engine configuration as the 240SX during these years. Sure, it won’t win you any races, but I can just about guarantee that it will run long enough for your grandkids to enjoy it. So if you really want a wheezy V6 with every 60,000 mile timing belt change, you’ll have to look elsewhere. As you’d expect, this one is completely stock and runs great, and the engine bay is about as close to factory presentation as I’ve ever seen
